The US special counsel Robert Mueller has convened a grand Jury in Washington, DC to investigate Russia’s interference in the 2016 elections, The Wall Street Journal and Reuters report.
The special counsel has impaneled a grand jury over Russian meddling in US election. The investigation has now become a truly serious business.
The investigation put President Trump under fierce pressure. After the the grand jury impaneled, the pressure has already mounted the climax.
This move, however, indicates that Mueller’s inquiry is gaining steam. Robert Muller is investigating if Russia meddled in US election 2016 and Donald Trump campaign or associates had a part to play to defeat Democrat candidate Hillary Clinton.
“Robert Mueller’s special counsel investigation has always been a concern for the Trump administration. Now it’s deadly serious business.”
Reuters reports that the jury has issued subpoena over a meeting between a Russian lawyer and Donald Trump’s son after Mr. Trump won the Republican nomination.
The New York Times reported that Trump Jr. was told that the Russian lawyer had information to help his father’s candidacy as part of the Russian government effort to win Donald Trump ticket to the White House. Trump Jr. later confirmed the report and said “it was a waste of 20 minutes”
A grand jury is a legal body empowered to conduct official proceedings and investigate potential criminal conduct, and determine whether criminal charges should be brought.
A grand jury may compel the production of documents and compel sworn testimony of witnesses to appear before it.
Anthony Zurcher, BBC North America reporter writes, “Robert Mueller’s special counsel investigation has always been a concern for the Trump administration. Now it’s deadly serious business.”
“With the news that a grand jury has been convened in Washington DC, and that it is looking into the June 2016 meeting between Donald Trump Jr and Russian nationals, it’s clear the investigation is focusing on the president’s inner circle,” Zurcher writes.
