Australian Opposition Deputy Whip Resigns After China Audio Leaked

Sam Dastyari, an Australian Senator has been stripped of his positions after a recording of his statement on a controversial issue came to light.

Senator Dastyari’s position on the South China Sea contradicted his party’s policy on the issue that led to the consequences.

The Senator, who happened to be the deputy whip for the Labor Party, the opposition party in the Australian Parliament, stepped down from his designated position after his statement was leaked.

In the leaked audio, Senator Sam Dastyari is heard to remark on the South China Sea in defense of Beijing in the last year.

Senator Sam Dastyari, in response to the reporters’ question about the alleged tape, said it was a spur-of-the-moment mumbled response to a question.

In the leaked audio, Mr. Sam Dastyari is heard to remark that Australia shouldn’t get involved in “several thousand years of history.”

Senator Dastyari added, “The Chinese integrity of its borders is a matter for China.”

After the audio was leaked, Mr. Sam Dastyari told the Senate, “A recent audio recording shocked me, as it contradicted my recollection of events.”

The leader of the opposition Labor Party, Bill Shorten said that earlier Mr. Sam Dastyari mischaracterized his remarks.

Labor leader Mr. Bill Shorten has ordered Sam Dastyari to renounce his position as a Senate committee chair as well.
