German Chancellor Angela Merkel warned on Wednesday that U.S. President Trump’s ‘America first’ attitude may result in disaster for the U.S. in the long run.

The leaders had their difference from the beginning of the Trump presidency. But Merkel said her U.S. counterpart deserves the necessary respect he earned after winning a tough campaign where he defeated strong Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton.

Merkel Said, “He won a tough campaign. No matter my opinion of him, he deserves respect. This is not about being friends or being in a family. Each of us represents the interests of our countries and our citizens and we have to try as much as we can to advance these interests.”

The German Chancellor Merkel said, “An America that doesn’t bother with anything in the world but only itself will not be a great America.”

German Handelsblatt newspaper sponsored a forum where Angela Merkel cautioned against protectionist policies. She said that any such policy might help the incumbent U.S. president get elected but adopting such policies in practice might hurt the United States in the long run.

The German Chancellor Merkel said, “An America that doesn’t bother with anything in the world but only itself will not be a great America.”

The Fox News reported quoting Angela Merkel, “Many in the U.S. mistakenly view globalization as one country’s success at the expense of others, instead of as an opportunity that can allow everyone to win.”

When asked if her country would support the U.S. cause if a war broke out in the Korean Peninsula, German Chancellor Merkel said, “No, not automatically. I do not see any military solution to [the crisis with] North Korea. I think it is wrong.”
